How Is Toner Made?

How Does Toner Get From Powder to Paper?

A laser printer uses an electrostatic process rather than spraying liquid onto the page.

First, the printer creates an electrostatic image on a photosensitive drum. Toner particles are attracted to the appropriate areas of that image. The toner is then transferred onto the paper.

Finally, the paper passes through the fuser, which uses heat and pressure to melt the toner resin and permanently bond it to the paper.

That familiar warm-paper smell and freshly printed appearance? That’s part of the fusing process at work.

Why Does Toner Quality Matter?

Not all toner is necessarily formulated to perform the same way.

The toner formulation has to work with the printer’s:

  • Fuser temperature

  • Drum and imaging system

  • Electrostatic charge

  • Paper type

  • Print speed

  • Resolution

Using the wrong or poorly formulated toner can contribute to problems such as streaking, inconsistent density, poor adhesion, backgrounding, or excessive toner buildup.
